Commitment
Ofek LaChaim works to make shivha.co.il accessible to people with disabilities, in line with the Israeli Equal Rights for Persons with Disabilities Law (1998) and the Service Accessibility Regulations (2013). The site aims to meet Israeli Standard 5568, based on WCAG 2.1 level AA.
What has been done
- Semantic structure: one main heading per page, a heading hierarchy, landmark regions, breadcrumbs and a "skip to content" link.
- Full keyboard navigation with a visible focus indicator; menus, forms and buttons accessible to screen readers (labels, aria-live status messages).
- Colour contrast meeting AA in the default dark theme and in light mode; adjustable font size in the prayers and the siddur; large text by default.
- Tap targets of at least 44 px, forms with clear error messages, and a "quiet screen" for mourners with no decisions to make.
- Images with alternative text; user-generated content (dedications, memories) rendered as text.
- Hebrew (right-to-left) and English (left-to-right) on every page, and respect for the operating system's "reduce motion" preference.
- Automated checks (Lighthouse Accessibility 100 on every public page) and manual keyboard and mobile screen-reader checks.
Known limitations
- Printable PDFs (death notice, siddur, checklist) are generated in the browser and are not fully tagged. The same content is available as an accessible web page.
- Photos uploaded by participants to the memory collection are shown without detailed alternative text (beyond the contributor's name).
- The payment page of the payment provider (Grow) and the donation page (JGive) are external sites; their accessibility is the responsibility of their operators.
